Ways to Wow Your Winter décor

In order to survive a blistering cold Illinois winter, your home needs more than a six-month supply of coffee and a collection of blankets and sweaters. If you plan on hibernating until spring, your home needs to feel homey and inviting. Luckily, winter décorations mean more than keeping your holiday wreaths and décor until March. The key to creating a stylish winter home is incorporating textural layers and seasonal colors with natural elements, touches of greenery and the strategic use of winter white.

As the temperature outside continues to drop, warm up to these ideas to bring coziness and comfort to your home this winter:

Fireplace focus. If you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace, it will naturally become the focal point of the room during the colder months. Rearrange your furniture, pulling pieces toward the center the room facing the health to create a cozy gathering and conversation spot. Adding a mirror above the mantel and a decorative screen below makes the fireplace the focal point while adding function and style. Finish off the hearth makeover with plush upholstery and patterns to add warmth, even without a roaring fire.

Treat your windows. To keep your spirits merry and bright during and after the holidays, add bold window treatments or bright décor on the window sills. The extra TLC in your living space will keep you motivated and inspired through the winter months.

Cheers to color. Infuse your living space with pops of color to help alleviate the winter “blahs.” Think boldly patterned pillows paired with a brightly colored blanket to cheer up the indoors to contrast the cold and stark outdoors. The bonus? The pillows will nicely transition into the spring and summer décor, giving you more bang for your décorating buck.

Cozy comfort. While wood flooring has a style all its own, it requires a cozy update for the winter months. Including a fluffy area rug to your main seating area to adds warmth and texture. For additional visual interest, add layers. Tossing in a couple of extra throw pillows or a cozy throw that match your current décor makes for a quick and stylish winter update.

Seasonal scents. While the décor is important in giving your home a warm and cozy feeling, don’t forget about the smells of the season. A candle, bowl of potpourri or diffuser in a wintry scent (think pine, cinnamon or vanilla) fills your entire home with seasonal cheer. Make a scent-sational statement by displaying the arrangement on your mantel or using it as a table centerpiece.
